LIGHTS OUT
Mise-en-scene: (propps, makeup, costumes, lighting, setting):
-
The setting is found in a type of residential area where there are individual houses.
-
We are able to see a woman between 40-50 years old that lives alone and is getting prepared to sleep.
-
She is wearing her pijama to tell us it is very late and she is comfortable in her house.
-
Her hair is in a messy bun which tells us she is not going to go out.
-
During the opening we are not able to see any makeup on her face because as the intention is trying to make it look as she is going to sleep her face has to be natural.
-
As it is late there is no natural lighting, we can see how she starts putting the lights on and off and suddenly all lights go out.
-
The setting of the film is in a normal-small house that gives a sense of creepiness as lights go out and she is alone.
Sound:
-
At the beginning we can hear the rain hitting the floor. This makes the opening to the film more scary as it is a rainy night where she is alone.
-
When she turns on and off the lights the sound matches perfectly to when the person appears and disappears.
-
We are able to hear when she is laying down in the bed she gulps as she is feeling frightened and this is a way it can make the audience understand her.
-
As she is inside her bed she directly looks at the door and hears the floor cracking as the person is walking towards the room.
-
When all the lights turn off she immediately goes inside the blanket and we hear her nearly crying as she is very scared of what will happen next.
Editing:
-
At the beginning when she is walking from the end of the hall to her bedroom we can see various cuts from the two perspectives. And it keeps repeating every time the lights go on and off showing the person perspective and the woman's perspective.
-
As again when she is lying down in the bed five cuts appear as the first one of her face and the next cut is her perspective looking at the door and this repeatedly.
-
When all lights go out she goes inside the blanket and the lamp next to her bed starts going on and off but in a slow motion at the same speed as she cries.
Camera:
-
At the beginning it starts with a medium shot while she is walking through the hall.
-
As she presses the switch off it changes perspectives and changes to a long shot where we can see her whole figure.
-
When she realises there is someone there she starts switching it on and off and they use over the shoulder shots so the audience is able to see her and the other person.
-
When she cuts the sellotape they use a close up shot so we can see what she is doing.
-
Again this repeats when she is lying down in the bed, they use a close up shot so we are able to see her facial expressions and feel scared as her.
-
When she stares at the door they use a point of view shot where we are able to see from her perspective what is happening, making it as if we are her.
-
Later on another close up is used when she is touching the extension plug so we are able to see her intention.
-
At the end we can see an extreme close up shot fist directly at the face of the woman and then into the person's face where the opening finishes used to create a scary moment just at the end. Also this is done on purpose so the audience wants to know what is going to happen so they stay until the end.
