INTERTEXTUALITY
DEFINITION
Is when a text implicitly or explicitly refers to another text, by using distinctive, common or recognisable elements of the referenced text. The effect of using intertextuality helps the audience recognise the links between different texts therefore engages the audience even more.

EXamples
LAST FRIDAY NIGHT - KATY PERRY

OPENING SCENE

CLOSING SCENE
Throughout the music video there are intertextualities of a film as there is a opening scene which simulates a film opening and there are credits at the end which show who the different actors and actresses were in the music video. This makes the music video look as a film therefore it is useful to engage the audience as they want to find out what happens.

SOCIAL MEDIA
There are intertextual references that are shown through the use of social media, they made an alternative version of Facebook but named it Friendplace instead. Since the target audience will be young they will be able to identify the social media platform and make a link between the two. It is a way of attracting the audience as they are familiar with the app used in the music video therefore they will feel identified.

REBECCA BLACK
Another intertextual reference is made from another music video which is called 'Friday' and the singer is Rebecca Black. She has been included in the music video so the audience is able to identify her from the song she made. Both Rebecca's song and Katy Perry's include the word FRIDAY in their songs title therefore the viewers are able to make a connection.
TURN UP THE MUSIC - CHRIS BROWN

TURN UP THE MUSIC - CHRIS BROWN

SMOOTH CRIMINAL - MICHAEL JACKSON
Chris Brown has become very popular because of his inspiration on Michael Jackson and this has been seen through several of Chris Brown music videos. His intertextual references are based on other music videos in which he takes popular features of Michael Jackson. In this case he has interpreted a scene where they are dancing and Chris has added a twist in his own one. This allows the audience to immediately identify the dance with the artist and makes the viewers admire Chris Brown's interpretations. Chris Brown wears a similar costume in order to create a connection.
